Feminism in Film

http://www.ubcpress.ca/books/pdf/chapters/2007/CinematicHowling.pdf

A very interesting and revealing criticism of the Disney movie Mulan. Which happened to be one of my favourite disney movies prior to reading this. Now I will need to give it a second thought.

In the News

Ok so I haven't posted in a while I wanted to just present some links to some interesting articles of note:

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/commentaries/Domestic_violence_is_your_business-123596574.html  <--- the article here talks about domestic violence in Trinidad. With the recent upsurge of publicized cases of abuse this issue is of immediate concern.

http://www.amnesty.org/es/node/22503 <---- Women are treated terribly in Egypt after being arrested from protesting. Why is this still happening in 2011?

THE "SISSY BOY" Experiment-

This heart wrenching story was all over news this week. A boy is experimented on at the age of 5 after showing feminine tendencies. A psychologist, who himself shows potential homosexual inclinations does experiments and concludes it is possible to prevent someone or cure someone from becoming or being gay. This boy later grows into a man who ends up killing himself. Below is a video and an article on the story.

Beauty: its all in the colour??

http://madamenoire.com/53784/the-latest-black-woman-pile-on-were-the-ugliest-of-all/

I would have loved to read the original article. But going off what this writer says it sounded very offensive. However this article would be far more powerful if she hadn't taken the sarcastic defensive route and took a more factual tone. Yet I could understand though how her emotions came into play. What is beauty anyway??

The original article sounded like really just an opinion that was being used as a fact or as an opinion of a majority of society when it really just reflected the views of the author.

Is beauty subjective or objective?

Is there such a thing as universal beauty??

Matriarchy a social probability ?

http://reason.com/archives/2008/01/15/the-coming-american-matriarchy < A very interesting article about the "coming matriarchy" in america and western cultures.

The following article breaks down what a matriarchal society would be like in comparison to the current patriarchal one. It's very interesting. There are some really great points although I think I am not sure how a matriarchal society would work practically speaking. Is it possible to strike a balance between the two? That would be interesting and would probably be most beneficial. Opinions on this would be interesting. Send me a comment!
